Harley Quinn is a girl of many layers, but the first thing you'll notice about her is when she loves, she does it with all her heart. She is ruthless and furiously dedicated to her friends and family, willing to risk her life for them again and again and leaning on them just as often as she hopes they'll lean on her.
Her big heart can cause her to act irrationally such as the time she used a catapult to try and fling herself all the way from Brooklyn New York to Arkham Asylum in Gotham City to rescue her best friend Poison Ivy. She was willing to risk life, limb and sanity to rescue Ivy. Even after having made so much progress putting that place behind her. And she would take risks like that every day for any of her close family and friends. This does however prove to be a difficult task as she is constantly making friends and growing her family.
Another example of her big heart would be how she treats animals. On her first day back in Brooklyn she ran across a man mistreating his dog and promptly rescued the poor pooch. Later she adopted over fifty cats, dogs, bunnies and birds just to spare them from being euthanized, and even later still she spent a large chunk of her own savings to purchase a swarm of birds from a pet shop only to set them free. Harley cares deeply for animals to the point where she can’t stand to see or even think of them sad or in pain. And she’s willing to go above and beyond for them.
Harley usually has the best of intentions, but her reactions are often over the top and excessive. One day she was acting as psychologist for an old woman in a nursing home, the woman explained to Harley that her family never came to see her anymore and it was making her feel suicidal. Harley’s response to this was to drive a bulldozer through the families house, wreck their personal possessions, kidnap them in the trunk of a car and then lecture them on how terrible they had treated her. Really all she needed to do was call the family and set up a meeting to discuss things but she decided a more traumatizing and aggressive method was acceptable.
On the flip side when she can apply her psychological expertise to a situation and actually help someone she does. At one point she was kidnapped by a stalker who intended on keeping her locked in a cage in his home until she loved him. While Harley could have easily escaped his grasp or beaten him senseless, instead she spent the night talking to him, persuading him to turn himself in so he could get proper help for his obsessive behavior. She saw a part of herself in him and gave him all the sympathy and help she wished she’d gotten once upon a time.
Of course she may be a big hearted lover of all things great and small, but she is not by any means a pacifist. She can turn incredibly violent especially when her life is in danger such as the time a bus full of escaped convicts were chasing her through a hardware store.
Her merciless nature can also be seen in a series of assassinations she performed alongside her friend Sy Borgmen. They systematically tracked down and killed several retired KGB spies and assassins, including in one case an old man in a coma who Harley very messily dispatched. He was ultimately harmless in his current state but Harley wasted him rather then wasting time with the morality of her assassination.
Despite her usual boundless confidence Harley does allow herself to get overwhelmed at times, usually by stress and trying to do too many things at once. Among her responsibilities include working two different jobs as a psychiatrist, participating in a roller derby team, maintaining the apartment complex she oversees, and fighting crime and injustice in her own neighborhood wherever she sees it.
With all these balls in the air it’s understandable something would have to fall by the way side and in this case it was her attempt at having a social life out side of all those activities. The stress of it all finally got to her when she failed to make a dinner date with a handsome young man she was fancying and it drove her to tears.
Harley’s impulsive nature has often put her at the center of trouble as well, including attempting to jump the grand canyon on a motor cycle. Someone remarked “You’d have to be insane to try that.” Sure enough she stole his motorcycle and would have given it a shot if she hadn’t been stopped by Ivy.
A much larger example of things getting out of control because of an impulsive choice she made was when Harley found the famous heroine Power Girl unconscious, she opted to take the woman home to try and help her.
When she discovered Power Girl had lost her memory Harley immediately hatched a plan to convince Power Girl they were best friends and crime fighting partners. This lie was perpetuated over an entire adventure that took the girls to the farthest corner of space and back. An entire intergalactic adventure sparked off all because Harley decided on a whim to lie her way into a friendship with a super heroine.
